REPORTS TO: V.P. of Engineering
SUPERVISES: Department Engineers, Field Engineers, Designers and Draftspersons
AUTHORITIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for the management of the department to include work assignments, work quality, meeting project schedule and budget, personnel reviews, department hiring, separations and resource needs.
- Responsible for all strategic and tactical planning for the department and provides input to the same planning for the Engineering Team.
- Act as a Compliance Champion for the organization and work to promote a culture of compliance throughout the organization.
- Monitoring for changes in, and making recommendations for improvements to comply with laws, rules, regulations, and policies that govern business activities in your department or subject area.
- Assist in compliance risk assessments and risk reporting in accordance with the Company’s risk assessment program.
- Developing, providing, and documenting compliance training.
- Compliance monitoring, surveillance, and auditing efforts, and assisting in investigations of suspected compliance violations.
QUALIFICATIONS / KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCE:
- General:
- Minimum 5 years of supervision of Engineers, Designers, Draftspersons and/ or Field Engineers.
- Minimum 15 years of shipyard design and construction experience or equivalent experience
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to meet cost and schedule goals
- Experienced in interacting with Production, multiple design teams from several companies, customer representatives and equipment manufacturers.
- Computer literate and familiar with AutoCAD and Microsoft Office products.
- Thorough knowledge of ship and propulsion systems
- Strong working knowledge of Maritime Regulatory Authorities (i.e. ABS, DNV, GL, NAVSEA, MIL, USCG, IMO, etc.)
- US Citizenship
- Required to acquire and maintain a security clearance
- Chief Naval Architect:
- Successful completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Naval Architecture
- Thorough knowledge of vessel structural design
- Thorough knowledge of vessel trim & stability calculations
- Thorough knowledge of ShipConstructor and Navisworks
- Department Consists of Naval Architects, Structural Engineers, Shock Engineers and Structural Designers and Draftspersons
- Working knowledge of FEA methods is preferred
- Chief Mechanical Engineer:
- Successful completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Marine or Mechanical Engineering
- Thorough knowledge of ship and propulsion system design and operation
- Thorough knowledge of engine alignment and shaft design and alignment
- Thorough knowledge of HVAC and Piping design
- Thorough knowledge of ShipConstructor and Navisworks
- Department consists of Mechanical Engineers and Mechanical, Pipe and HVAC Designers and Draftspersons, Fitout Group
- Working knowledge of FEA methods is preferred
- Knowledge of composite shafting is preferred
- Chief Electrical Engineer:
- Successful completion of a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering
- Thorough knowledge of power distribution and lighting systems
- Thorough knowledge of automation, control and communication systems
- Thorough knowledge of ShipConstructor and Navisworks
- Strong working knowledge of IEEE and Military Electrical Standards
- Department consists of Electrical Engineers and Electrical Designers and Draftspersons – includes power, lighting, automation, and ship systems integration.
- Department responsible for oversight and coordination with Sea Frame Control, Navigation, Communication, and Entertainment/Training System Suppliers
- Chief Structural Engineer:
- Successful completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering
- Naval Architecture or Ocean Engineering preferred
- Thorough knowledge of vessel structural design
- Thorough knowledge of ShipConstructor and Navisworks
- Thorough knowledge of Structural and Naval Architecture analysis tools
- Knowledge of Lift and Turns, Launch, and Dry Docking for shipyard support
- Department Consists of Naval Architects, Structural Engineers, Shock Engineers, and Structural Designers and Draftspersons
- Successful completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering
TOOLS:
- Computer – MS Office, AutoCAD
DIRECTION EXERCISED:
- Will lead and direct the work of Engineers, Designers and Draftspersons
- Will determine technical adequacy of drawings and calculations
DISCRETION EXERCISED:
- Will evaluate Engineers, Designers and Draftspersons
- Has authority to direct, evaluate and correct the work of Engineers, Designers and Draftspersons
LIAISES WITH: Engineers, Production Personnel, Customer, Regulatory Bodies, Program Management and Equipment Suppliers
ADDITIONAL GUIDELINES:
- General:
- Experienced in the construction of high speed aluminum vessels is preferred
- Working knowledge of modular construction methods is preferred
- Experienced in design and construction of US Navy vessels is preferred
- Understanding of shock design is preferred
- Candidates must meet the following employment eligibility guidelines to be eligible for employment with Austal USA:
- Required to obtain and maintain a DoD clearance may be required if deemed necessary in the scope of your position responsibilities.
- 18 years or older at time of application
- Able to provide proof of US Person status (permanent resident or citizen)
- No felony convictions of theft/deception or violent crimes within seven years from disposition date
- No felony convictions of drug crimes within three years from disposition date
