REPORTS TO:  Project Manager

SUPERVISES:  Functional Leads indirectly


  • Responsible for coordinating coating & preservation subcontractor(s) activities on Austal new construction projects throughout the Mobile, AL new construction campus (MMF, FA, B&C, VCY, etc.)
  • Provides coordination, guidance and direction to the coating & preservation subcontractor(s) to ensure that work being performed enables successful and efficient completion of the vessels with focus on milestone achievement and cost and schedule performance
  • Create and manage applicable coating & preservation process documentation within Austal QMS
  • Manage creation and maintenance of subcontractor(s) scope of work documents by gathering input from all company stakeholders
  • Work with subcontractor(s) to ensure that necessary customer/surveyor surveys are called out and scheduled in accordance with Austal QMS processes.
  • Gather and provide input on vessel coating sequence and strategy to optimize overall cost – capture data to develop complete understanding of direct and indirect coating cost and schedule impacts
  • Capture, document, and incorporate lessons learned into vessel coating processes
  • Coordinate, mediate and resolve work sequence conflicts related to constraints that effect performance to cost and schedule
  • Maintain a daily presence regarding the work in progress performed by subcontractor(s) to monitor safety, housekeeping, work progress and staff performance
  • Monitor subcontractor(s) rework and document requests for deviation from scope and change orders – support processing of change orders through Austal procurement subcontracting manager
  • Review and validate subcontractor(s) timesheets
  • Conduct meetings and attend others as required
  • Ensure the work in progress is in accordance with the published schedule sequence
  • Perform validation of status reporting provided by subcontractor(s) for actual work being performed to ensure accuracy of reporting functions required to support EVMS.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with Quality procedures and documents
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with applicable contract requirements
  • Monitor and ensure required compliance with regulatory body and classification society guides, rules and regulations
  • Maintain daily communication and interaction with the Project Manager to report status and issues and have the ability to initiate and follow through with required variance analysis and associated corrective action plans
  • Develop and present data to management reflecting overall status and performance of subcontractor(s)
  • Monitor and validate subcontractor(s) resource requirements actuals against planned work in progress
  • Monitor and track Austal Blast & Coat equipment maintenance schedule and coordinate with Austal Facility Maintenance & SCM team to ensure proper scheduled maintenance is performed with little/no impact on production schedule
  • Monitor subcontractor(s) use of Austal Blast & Coat equipment is in accordance with manufacture recommendations
  • Ensure appropriate subcontractor(s) use of Austal provided consumable or reusable materials (blast media, paint, etc)
  • Create and manage shop schedule and project IMS coating activities for Blast & Coat facility through coordination with Project Managers and Production Control department


  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a ship building, ship repair or similar  construction and manufacturing industrial type environment specializing in coating and preservation trade activities with a minimum 3 years’ experience at a Foreman level (or equivalent)
  • High School Diploma/GED required
    • College degree or industry certifications in coating & preservation field preferred
  • Competency in ship/vessel coating & preservation processes including surface preparation, applying, inspecting, and repairing marine coating & preservation systems – Experience with steel government shipbuilding programs preferred
  • Ability to read and interpret shipbuilding contracts and specifications
  • Ability to read and interpret regulatory body and classification society guides, rules and regulations
    • Ability to read and comprehend engineering drawings/specifications and data and navigate with applicable software
    • Have a working knowledge and past experience with EVMS principles and processes
    • Ability to understand schedule reporting tools and be competent in maintaining and validating schedule related data
    • Competent in use of Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook and Excel) and PowerPoint software
    • Ability to work independently and be self-motivated
    • Willingness to work irregular and sometimes lengthy work schedule
    • This position will involve considerable time (as much as 100%) onboard the vessel at various degrees of construction, going up and down staircases and vertical ladders at heights reaching in excess of 75 feet in temperatures which, at times, can reach extreme levels.

The ability to obtain and maintain a DoD clearance may be required if deemed necessary in the scope of your position responsibilities.
