REPORTS TO:  Ship Project Manager



  • Provide coordination, guidance, and direction to the functional project leads to ensure that the work being performed enables successful and efficient maintenance and repair of the vessel with focus on milestone achievements, budgeted man-hours and schedule performance
  • Proactive deck plate management to identify, mediate, and resolve craft specific production work sequence, sub-contractor, material deficiencies and information issues related to constraints that potentially could affect performance to cost and schedule
  • Ensure work is completed with satisfactory results to military, company, and contract standards.
  • Assist the Project Lead in the overall performance of the task order, personnel supervision, timeliness and accuracy of deliverables, and correction of any real or perceived problem areas
  • Provide process improvement recommendations to the Maintenance Team
  • Maintain a daily presence regarding the work in progress to monitor safety, housekeeping, work progress, and performance and continuous management of Austal labor and/or subcontractors executing work  
  • Conduct craft meetings and participate in/lead meetings as deemed appropriate by Project Lead
  • Provide OTJ training to less senior Austal personnel and subcontractors on naval PDSS maintenance and repair protocols.
  • Manage and assume responsibility for assigned Planned Maintenance and 4E spec work packages from planning to execution while providing appropriate work status updates
  • Coordinate with Advanced Planner to lay out planned work in the Maintenance plan and or Integrated Master Schedule (IMS) including all milestones, checkpoints and test requirements.
  • Ensure the work in progress is in accordance with the published schedule sequence and that production schedules are reasonable and achievable
  • Perform validation of status reporting against the actual work being performed to ensure accuracy of reporting functions
  • Ensure compliance with quality procedures and documents while maintaining OQE is support task completion documentation
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with the contract requirements
  • Maintain daily communication and interaction with the Project Lead to report status and concerns and have the ability to initiate and follow through with required variance analyses and associated corrective action plans
  • Monitor and validate resource requirements for actuals against planned work in progress
  • Monitor and validate use of rework and lessons learned processes and initiatives to promote continuous improvement
  • Prepares SOWs which depict an accurate detailed work scope necessary for task bid request and task execution requirements including all exit criteria to successfully close out the task
  • Proactive deck plate management to identify and resolve, material and information issues in AOR to allow work to progress to plan.
  • Assumes additional duties in the absence of the project leader.
  • Completes work in various offsite locations requiring travel to customer sites to support work on vessels. The potential for offsite travel is expected to be 15-20%.


  • Must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19
  • High school diploma/GED required. Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Management preferred.
  • Five (5) years’ experience in a shipbuilding, ship repair or similar construction and manufacturing industrial type environment that includes supervision or management experience.
  • Fully competent in industry related crafts or specific discipline.
  • Ability to read Technical Drawings and interpret the Navy Engineering Operational Sequencing System (EOSS)
  • Ability to obtain PQS 301 Work Center Supervisor qualifications but not limited to Craftsman, QAI Inspector and Maintenance Person
  • Knowledge of NAVSEA Technical Publication S0400-AD-URM-010/TUM Tag-Out User’s Manual and Shift Operations Management System (eSOMS).
  • Working knowledge of the requirements of COMLCSRONONEINST 4700.1 Tag-Out Standard Operating Procedures and has been approved to perform as a Repair Activity (RA) signer for each LCS 2 variant to date.
  • Advanced knowledge of NAVSEA Standard Items
  • Ability to utilize and interpret relevant cost and schedule data reports including having a familiarity of scheduling software (Primavera, Microsoft Project, etc.)
  • Ability to efficiently validate, interpret and understand task scheduling or work sequencing
  • Ability to use and interpret relevant cost and schedule data and use applicable software associated with these reporting functions
  • Ability to understand schedule reporting tools and be proficient in maintaining and validating schedule related data
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision and take initiative in all aspects of the position duties
  • Willingness to work irregular and extended work hours as needed
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Repair experience preferred

All candidates must meet Austal USA’s basic employment eligibility guidelines:

  • Able to provide proof of US Person status (permanent resident or citizen)
  • No felony convictions of theft/deception or violent crimes within seven years from disposition date
  • No felony convictions of drug crimes within three years from disposition date

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain required Security Clearance.

  • Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain prime shipyard(s) and Navy Base access credentials and applicable remote sites not limited to Foreign Naval Bases/commercial ports


This position will involve substantial time (as much as 100%) onboard the vessel at various degrees of construction, going up and down staircases and vertical ladders at heights reaching in excess of 75 feet in temperatures which, at times, can reach extreme levels.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the position. Must be able to tour all vessels and work sites.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is often required to stand, walk, utilize hands to manipulate, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and talk or hear.  The employee is occasionally required to work at a computer station. 

Specific physical requirements include the following:

  • Must have the ability to bend, squat, stoop, crawl, and kneel
  • Withstand periods of prolonged standing
  • Ability to turn head from side to side and about the vertical axis
  • Ability to turn body at the waist from side to side and about the vertical axis
  • Lift/push/pull up to 75lbs on an occasional basis
  • Lift/push/pull up to 20lbs on a frequent basis
  • Must have the ability to climb in a safe manner (climbing as a minimum includes stairs, scaffolding, ladders, and ramps)
  • Ability to work at heights above 12’ while working from ladders, scaffolding and/or man lifts
  • Able to work at a variety of levels (ex. waist, eye, overhead)
  • Demonstrate the ability to safely and appropriately use required tools and equipment
  • Demonstrate good balance while working on uneven surfaces and maneuvering obstacles
  • Possess sufficient handgrip and coordination to carry and operate tools and equipment
  • Ability to utilize personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toed shoes, goggles, respirator, safety harness, safety line, flotation gear, etc.) safely per OSHA standards
  • Ability to withstand cold and hot temperatures
  • Ability to enter 18” x 36” openings and work in confined spaces for prolonged periods of time
  • Able to respond to verbal and audible sounds/commands
  • Able to utilize adequate visual skills
  • Ability to fully extend the arm while reaching overhead, reaching out, reaching to the side, and reaching down
  • Ability to perceive attributes of an object/material such as size, shape, temperature and texture by means of receptors in the hands and fingers
