SUMMARY: Austal USA Advanced Technologies is the prime contractor on a program to integrate additive manufacturing and manufacturing automation into the US Navy submarine industrial base. Austal USA Advanced Technologies is seeking an experienced Sr. Program Manager at its Charlottesville, VA location to lead manufacturing automation both within Austal USA and across the submarine industrial base.

REPORTS TO: General Manager Austal Advanced Technologies

Director of Advanced Technologies.

Sr. Director of Innovation and Technology

AUTHORITIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Evaluate existing manufacturing automation technologies and solutions for application within advanced shipbuilding and supporting industries.
  • Remain current with and evaluate automated manufacturing outside of the defense industrial base and leverage effective commercial solutions effectively employed by those industries.
  • Develop an integration strategy for manufacturing automation into Austal’s shipyard production of submarine modules. 
  • Manage the integration manufacturing automation technologies and solutions into Austal’s shipyard production. 
  • Oversee the Manufacturing automation program funded by PEO Strategic Submarines and ensure successful execution of the program.
  • Lead the adoption of manufacturing automation across the entire submarine industrial base.
  • Integrate manufacturing automation technologies and solutions at the Advanced Technologies additive manufacturing facility in Charlottesville, VA and the U.S. Navy’s Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence in Danville, VA.
  • Contribute as a subject matter expert in manufacturing automation.

QUALIFICATIONS / KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related discipline required.
  • 10 years’ industry experience in manufacturing.
  • Experience dealing with the Navy and other DoD customers, including research organizations including ONR and DARPA, and commercial customers.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of government
  • Eligibility for a Secret Security Clearance from DoD.
  • Ability to travel 25% of time as required by position.
  • A person of high ethical standards who understands the importance and requirements for compliance.

  • Full discretionary authority to provide work direction to staff.
  • Full discretionary authority to establish and hold accountable for meeting performance standards.

LIAISES WITH: All other departments within the company, external customers, regulatory agencies, and suppliers.

ADDITIONAL GUIDELINES:

  • Candidates must meet the following employment eligibility guidelines to be eligible for employment with Austal USA:
